Verdi’s famed opera La Traviata will play at the royal Opera House from the 3rd October 2011 to the 25th January 2012. Sung in Italian with English surtitles La Traviata the Opera tells the devastating story of Violetta Valery, a courtesan, dying of consumption.
Set in 19th-century Paris La Traviata the Opera is one of Verdi’s more modern operas. A notorious courtesan Violetta is the Fallen Woman, throwing a glitzy party for the bourgeois society; she is propositioned by one of the young gentleman, Alfredo Germont, but only knowing a life of fun and not one of love she discards his attentions. Not for long though as the following winter the two are living together, until Alfredo’s Father puts an end to the affair.
Violetta is once again on her own as her past stops her from moving forward and she returns to the life of a courtesan. Selling her flesh to the highest bidder, Violetta has lost the one man she loved; will he come back in time to save her from dying alone?
La Traviata the Opera received its world premiere in 1853 and has been entertaining audiences around the world ever since.
