Based on the true story of the Von Trapp family The Sound of Music is one of the most recognisable musicals of all time. The 1956 film starring Julia Andrews became a cult hit and the show now has millions of fans worldwide. With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II the songs have become iconic of musical theatre.
In Salzburg, Austria Maria Rainer is preparing to begin her life as a nun, struggling to adjust to life in the convent Maria is sent by Mother Abbess to become governess to the children of widowed naval captain Captain Georg Von Trapp. The seven Von Trapp children are used to discipline and military order and Maria teaches them to sing and to embrace the joys of life.
Their father the Captain is pursuing a rich Baroness but it soon become apparent that his feelings are for Maria. Set against the backdrop of Germany’s occupation of Austria The Sound Of Music tells an uplifting story of hope, love and freedom as the Von Trapp family escape the conflict and danger by fleeing across the mountains.
The Sound of Music touring production includes the songs The Sound of Music, Favourite Things, The Lonely Goatherd, Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi and So Long, Farewell.
Following Andrew Lloyd Webbers programme how to solve a problem like Maria? the new production opened in London’s West End in 2006. Now touring the UK Connie Fisher has revived her role as Maria.
